Broadcasting Intern - Tim Kurkjian Sports Journalism Fellowship

Over the summer of 2021, I spent the season with my hometown Bethesda Big Train in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball league throughout the Washington, D.C Metro Area. Through this fellowship, I worked with the team's General Manager and my broadcast partner to envision and execute a YouTube-streamed broadcast of all games - home and away, the only team in the league to do so. The majority of this role was on-air Play-by-Play or color commentating, as well as pre- and post-game hosting, but I also contributed in operations - including filling in as PA Announcer - as needed. Throughout the season, I broadcasted more than 40 games and adjusted to the rigor of and everyday baseball schedule

We incorporated Switcher Studio, an iOS based streaming app as well as OBS, to deliver high-quality videos that led to a more than 400% increase in the YouTube Channel’s subscriber base and a consistent viewership of approximately 500 views per stream, including one game upwards of 1200 views. I also took the lead role in managing the YouTube content post-stream as well, working with a volunteer editor to deliver cut-down highlights and other clips from the broadcast to the channel, managing tags and other SEO tasks as well.
